Thank you for being such a good friend to my family.   It seems so unfair that your life was cut short but I should have guessed when we nearly lost you four years ago that you were already living on borrowed time.

Though I was never that close to you these last two decades, the ones I'll always remember is the 80's and early 90's when we we're both still in the service and raising our children.  Your children were older than mine and it was a blessing to have them sit my own very young ones.  I know they treasure the memories of your gentle nature and kindness and the pool at your house.  I'll never forget the 25th Anniversary party you helped my sister set up for my husband and I.  I was so very thoughtful and beautiful.

Our children shared many events together; birthdays, anniversaries, summer pool parties, bowling, and later, the graduation of our children.  You were ever thoughtful and kind, never forgetting a birthday or special event and ensuring a card or a party was set up and usually at your lovely home.

I will always remember your attentive ear when I laid out problems I was having with my job, weight, kids, and husband.  You always had excellent advice garnered from your farmer's background.  I envied your poise and steel trap mind.  You never hesitated to stand up for yourself and others when they were being wronged or bullied.  I was always too cowardly and marveled at your courage.

Your last few years were  pain-filled and confined to a wheelchair but it never stopped your indomitable spirit a bit.  You continued to give of yourself to all those that came to see you and ask your advice despite your failing condition.  Your grandchildren will always remember your loving arms, hugs and kisses, and sage advice.

All will miss you terribly, especially me but at least I know you are finally free of pain, made sure your life was in order, and left no regrets behind when you left us.

You would have loved the wake that was held for you.  You didn't want a funeral as you wanted your life celebrated with joy and memories shared amongst the living.  Your daughters each said final words that were tearful and funny, the bagpipe player deafened our ears with Amazing Grace, the brief video of your past was heartrending, the 21-gun salute was inspiring especially with the motorcycle flag corp from the Veteran's Association, and, finally the farewell wishes and hopes we sent aloft on red balloons. The wake ended with a fine potluck and conversation where each regaled the other with tales of their time spent with you. Everyone doing their best to ease ours and your family's grief.

Goodbye my longtime friend, may peace be yours at last.
My friend was only 59 years old. It's scary to think we were the same age but her retired life after the service was never one of good health. That was the one thing I had she nor her husband did. We miss her.
