Kids have started college and things, of course, haven't gone smoothly at all.  Too many little things have added up to a parent's personal nightmare of issues.  None of them too big but all annoying.  The first issue was when they would get their loan money.  During the orientation, I specifically asked if their grants would be separate and used first or added to the loan ... answer yes.  Wrong!  I discovered the one briefing did not really know what she was talking about or she really didn't pay attention to the question.  So later we discovered the grant money WAS used to pay part of the tuition and (the biggest pain in my ass!!!!) the loan money was not going to be available until ONE MONTH AFTER the quarter started!  SAY WHAT!!!!

We had to be the unfortunate recipient of a newly instituted change in how first time student loans would be handled.  Because so many simply skipped out with the money and didn't attend school at all, the colleges were forced to take drastic measures.  Now new students must wait for their money after they show they are actively attending.  I can understand their reasoning and even agree with it, but because this wasn't clearly explained as it should have been during orientation, I and my daughters got caught without money to get required supplies and books.  I was forced to use a credit card (whimper....with high interest rate) to get what they needed.  They are lucky I'd just paid this card off or they wouldn't have their supplies at all.  This is just frustrating as hell for us all.

More misinformation continued to add to my woes.  Checking the catalog, I wanted to see what most of the class fees and other extraneous fees would be assessed and thought I'd gotten everything I needed, relying on the catalog being correct.  Another shock, mild but irritating, was the locker fees.  The catalog said 50 cents a quarter when in fact, it was $5!  Big difference.

I truly hope there are no more nasty surprises as the quarter moves forward.  At least one good thing has happened ... the girls love their classes.

I'll just have to suck up all the other problems and deal with them but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth for certain.  If I was still working It might not be so painful but I'm retired and my husband just announced he was going to retire by end of summer.  Jeez ... can you say blindsided? This is certainly starting out to be a tumultuous year and we're only at the beginning of Spring! *sigh*
