It lay there in the center of my cluttered desk looking totally out of place.  I stared at it for several minutes before daring to reach out and actually touch it.

Ouch! It was real, alright. A thorn had punctured my finger. I sucked on the small wound and continued to stare at the purple rose.

Yes, I said purple! I thought for certain it had to be fake because I`ve never heard or seen a purple rose before. With caution this time, I pick up the single flower and studied it more closely.  It wasn`t painted and the petals were incredibly soft to the touch.

Frowning, I look around the room but no one was looking my way from the many cubicles that surrounded me. I don`t have a significant other and from what few friends I have, none would have given me anything like this.  It was twenty days till Valentine`s Day so I was at a loss as to how or why this was here.

Dumping my pencil jar, I lay the rose on the desk then go get some fresh water. I drop the rose in the rather short jar and set it on a corner of my desk then sit  and stare at it for a long moment.  Shaking my head, I set the mystery aside and get to work.

As the days passed, every morning there would be a purple rose waiting for me. By the second one's appearance, I asked everyone I worked with if they knew who was doing this or if they've seen who's been  leaving them but all deny knowledge and are now just as curious as I am about the mysterious rose sender, stopping by to stare at them in fascination. It certainly has become the most talked about subject around the water cooler.

I've since gotten a proper vase for them and though the first one is looking rather limp, the rest are doing well. The roses add a touch of color and serenity to my otherwise drab cubicle, but I'm going nuts trying to solve the mystery of who is giving these to me. At night as I try to sleep, I fantasize about the person and dream of being swept away in a new romance. But in my darker moments, I fear this may be just a cruel prank.  Those have happened to me before because of my orientation.

By the time I've received more than fifteen roses, half have since died but I'm loathed to toss them out, I've been getting anxious and paranoid.  Any new person coming into the office I watch closely...are they the one? But neither I nor anyone else sees anyone approaching my desk with a rose.  The excitement around me is rising as Valentine's Day approaches.

Many of my co-workers are taking bets that the culprit is waiting until that special day to announce themselves.  By now, I'm totally spooked and just want this over. The suspense is killing me.

I now have exactly twenty purple roses and it's Valentine's Day.  One would hope the day would be bright and sunny but this is winter and outside it's snowing hard. Nothing happens and the snow doesn't let up much to everyone's disappointment. Many have special plans that the weather is ruining but I have no such plans. A hot meal, warm p.j.s and watching TV in my warm apartment is all that's waiting for me at home. I don't even have a pet to keep me company.

At quitting time, I set out with the rest of the cattle to brave the blowing snow, crazy drivers, and growing darkness. I'm frozen and covered in wet snow by the time I put my key in the lock of my apartment door.

At first I don't notice anything odd, but as I step in and shut the door then I suddenly realize my apartment is softly lit and there is the smell of a freshly made meal hitting my nose.

I freeze.  Slowly turning around, I search my small living room carefully with my eyes only.  There are candles set on nearly every surface, glowing softly and making the room look cozy.  My small kitchen table is sitting in the center of the room with service for two set up on a white tablecloth, my best china, two candles, and a vase of purple roses, but there is no sign of anyone else.  Listening carefully, I hear movement in my kitchen.

Not taking my coat off, I walk as quietly as I can toward the kitchen. I should probably call the police but the set table and food tell me it isn't a robber, so with my heart in my throat, I reach the kitchen doorway and peer in.

A lean, rangy man with a mop of blond streaked, brown hair is just taking something that smells wonderful from my oven.  He's not handsome but does have a rugged beauty of his own with a dimple in the center of his chin that I always thought was cute.

I gape in shock at the sight of my building custodian. We've always been on friendly terms and I've had a small crush on him since the first day I moved in. This was my secret admirer?

"Jerek!" I blurt aloud, my normally deep voice squeaking in shock.

The man turns with his hands full and a comical look of chagrin on his face.

"Ahh, I was hoping to be done before you got in.  Hang on a sec while I put this down, darlin'."  His mid western twang sent a thrill down my spine.  I've always loved his voice and many other things about him as well.

"You're my secret admirer?" I gasp, stunned. "How did you manage to get into my office building much less know which floor and cubicle I worked at?"

He smiles broadly.  "Well darlin', it were easy.  I jest happen to know the custodian that does the janitorial work there and he would let me in when he was leaving at the end of his shift sos I could slip in and leave it."

"But why?"

A look of heat that sent my heart skittering and other things to stand up and notice came into those chocolate eyes as he walked toward me and took me into his arms.

"Because we be flirting a long time suga and I was tired of waiting for you to make the first move. In our world we have to be careful, I know that, so to let you know I weren't going to hurt or betray you, I hatched this here plan to surprise you and sort of break the ice gentle-like.  Seems to have worked," he chuckled.

I felt my face heat and my eyes drop in sudden shyness. "I...I never thought you cared for me that way. I've been wrong before..." My voice trails off as I feel his strong fingers caress my neck and send shivers down my back.

"As I guessed which was why I did our introduction this way or was I wrong?" he asked, gently, nuzzling my neck.

"N-n-no...you weren't wrong. It was the sweetest and most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me but it also drove me crazy," I admitted.

He laughed. "Good that was what I were after, darlin'!" Then he kissed me and I forgot everything else as the world fell away.

When I could breathe and think again, the food was cold, our clothes were all over the living room, and I was laying on my normally lonely bed beside the most wonderful lover I've ever had.

"I should reheat our meal, darlin'. After all, I did take all that time making it," he said lazily, running a finger over my right ear as my head lay on his chest.

"Good idea, I'm starved," I sigh contentedly.

A little later we're sitting down naked and eating his incredibly delicious meal.

"You are multi-talented," I compliment him as I set down my fork and rub my stomach in pleasure.

He grins broadly, pleased he'd made me happy.

"I do have one question, though," I say, taking a sip of my wine.

"What might that be, darlin'?"

"Where did you get those purple roses? No one has ever seen anything like that before."

He has an incredibly smug look on his face as he picks up his beer and downs a slug before answering.

"Me mom taught me how to grow flowers and how to get different colors just by grafting different species together. It took years but I came up with a variety of colors then came here to get into the flower business."

I gape at him.  "But...why are you working as a building custodian then?"

He sighed and frowned.  "They didn't take me seriously, practically laughed in my face.  Think they didn't believe a feller like me could do something like that.  Wouldn't even take the time to see what I had brought to show them. I was out of money so had to get whatever job I could."

"Oh, that's just wrong," I say, outraged then a brilliant thought came to me.  "You know, I could help you market yourself.  That's my job I guess you know already.  Forget those snobs. I'll help you get noticed and I have no doubt that you'll be making a name for yourself in very little time," I said enthusiastically.  I was fired up about this and my mind was whirling with ways to help him accomplish his dream.

His face lit up and was no little surprised.  "You don't have to do that, suga..."

I stop him with a raised hand.  "No, you've done something wonderful for me now it's my turn to do you the same," I say firmly.

He eyes me thoughtfully then smiles one of those body melting looks that turns me to jello instantly.  "That'd be wonderful, darlin'.  I've always dreamed of having my own flower shop and specialty line of one of a kind flower varieties.  Seems I may have gained more from my boldness than I'd hoped.  But let me tell you something important.  It were you I wanted not what you could do for me.  Don' be forgetting that," he said seriously.

My smile was even warmer.  "I know, I believe you and I think we're going to be making sweet music for a long time.  Shall we seal the deal now?" I ask coyly, standing up and coming to his side, reaching down to take his hand.

He grins broadly and stands, putting a warm arm around my waist. "I'm all for that."

I laugh.  As we reach the bedroom I ask, "Your first introduction as a flower purveyor is going to have to be that lovely purple rose."

"I spent the last year developing that jest for you, suga. If you want me to do that, I'll name it after you so everyone knows jest how important you are to me."

I blush and give him a kiss.  "What a wonderful idea, thank you Jerek."

"You're welcome darlin'."

As we lay down on the bed and he covers me in many hot kisses, I think how wonderful my life has suddenly become and the caper is having a flower named after me, though calling a rose, 'David's Purple Passion,' is rather odd.  However, I don't care as every time I hear it I'll be reminded of how that particular flower gave me my soul mate.
This came to me last night. I hope people like it. It is a gay couple so no flaming. I'm making a version of this for my fan fic too with everyone's favorite pairing.
